what paint colors to choose for your guest bedroom

You want the guests that you invite over to feel comfortable. Specifically in the room they’ll be staying in when they come to visit. So what color scheme should you choose for the design? Well, honestly, there’s no “right” answer, but there are a few things for you to consider.

When you walk into a chain hotel room, are you overwhelmed at how cozy it feels? Probably not. They’re all pretty similar… neutral colors, neat (hopefully), simple furniture and fixtures, and no personal touches. It doesn’t feel homey because, well, it’s not. But think about how would you feel if, instead, you walked in and the walls were a blinding neon green shade, the comforters were the same color as Beaker the Muppet’s hair, and there were chevron carpets that had a nice muddy hue. Even less like home, right? Sure, both situations would work as an acceptable place to sleep as long, as there’s pillows, sheets, and everything is clean, but we’re guessing that you’d like your guests to leave with more than just the thought that it was an “acceptable place to sleep”.

All that to say, color does have a big impact! The wall color is the first step in creating that homey atmosphere. Don’t overthink it. Just ask yourself: ‘does this color give off tranquil and calm vibes?’ If not, maybe move to the next color swatch. And keep in mind: choose a color family, not just a single color. It starts with the walls, but it doesn’t end there! Neutrals, classic shades, and soft tones are always the most popular choices when you’re aiming for cozy and tranquil guest rooms.

Pehaps you’re thinking: ‘but I love bright colors!’ And we would tell you that there’s nothing wrong with a bright color. A vivid blue or a pop of coral can be stunning in the right setting. But all things in moderation is a good rule of thumb.

All that being said, we do have some suggestions! We’re in the business of paint colors, after all. Here’s a roundup of some of our favorites.

  1. Sherwin Williams Alabaster is a soft creamy white that is the opposite of drab. It will pull any neutral theme together flawlessly and is a great backdrop if you want to incorporate color in smaller design choices, like wall art and hangings.

  2. Sherwin Williams Sleepy Hollow is a gorgeous cool blue with grayish undertones that oozes charm. It would pair beautifully with any number of gray and taupe colored bedding, curtains, and carpeting.

  3. Sherwin Williams Cascade Green is the color for you if you love sage. And we know we won’t be the first (or the last) to suggest that somewhere (anywhere!) you incorporate a rich medium brown wood—a bench, a bedside table, the floors, hey even picture frames would work!

  4. Sherwin Williams Timeless Taupe is true to it’s name: timeless. It is somehow both striking and serene at the same time. Brushed gold fixtures, mirrors, and lamps look lovely against this canvas.

  5. Sherwin Williams Morning Fog is such a stunning shade, neither too light, nor too dark. It’s the perfect setting for a more modern neutral theme. Every time we use it, we love it more and more.

  • Bonus choice (because 5 just isn’t enough!): Sherwin Williams In The Navy is a rich navy blue hue. You’ll notice that it’s more bold than our other suggestions, but it would make an amazing accent wall!

Like we said, there is no exactly right choice. We didn’t list any reds or yellows on here, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find those colors in the perfect shade that would create a guest room oasis. You absolutely can!

Turning your house into a home is simply a recipe of a little time and a lot of love. You can’t go wrong with those ingredients, whatever color you decide on.
